The official term is a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) number. It is used to monitor a carrier’s safety information during audits, compliance reviews, and crash investigations.

– You transport 9 to 15 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.
– You transport 16 or more passengers without compensation.
